In the beginning of January, California experienced one of its worst natural disasters in recent memory, a huge wildfire that burned large swaths of land in the Los Angelos area. In terms of speculating on how a disaster of this magnitude could have occurred, experts believe that a combination of factors, including a drought brought on by the effects of climate change may have been to blame. However, president incumbent Donald Trump was quick to shut down any speculation, saying that, instead, the blame should be placed squarely on California’s water management policies. Could it be the fact that, California, which historically has very wet winters that have now suddenly turned dry, is suffering from the effects of global warming, a phenomenon that is now affecting every country across the globe. No, says Trump, science still “doesn’t know”. Could be that the hottest year on record is contributing to a situation where local climates are becoming destabilized and natural disasters are becoming more and more potent as a result? Despite counseling from climate experts, Trump’s position remains the same. One thing we do know for sure though is that while Trump doesn’t believe that science knows about climate change just yet, Trump himself knows that the latest object of his plan for American territorial expansion, Greenland, is getting warmer and that more and more ice is melting there each year, but he’s still not quite sure why yet.
