The United States presidential election of 2024 ended in a close, but ultimately decisive victory for Donald Trump, leaving Democrats searching for answers as to what went wrong. Looking forward to the future, the party continues to search for ways that it can better appeal to voters, especially Latinos and young men, who formed the majority of Trump’s support base. In terms of policy ideas, some Democratic leaders have suggested continuing to emphasize focusing on improving Latino immigrant’s welfare through policies like increasing access to social services. However, considering these policy ideas were at the forefront of Harris’s proposals last November, there’s little reason to believe that this will lead to a different outcome four years down the line. On the other hand, there is a growing contingent of Democrats that is suggesting a different approach. Instead of emphasizing giving immigrants equal rights, why don’t we do the exact opposite, they suggest? The idea seems baffling, but considering Trump’s success with this novel approach, it seems like it may be the best way forward. As per this new report, Democrats are now emphasizing the need for implementing more discriminatory policies toward Latino immigrants, like forced deportations and limited access to health care. They also promise to redouble efforts to refer to immigrants as “rapists and criminals” as frequently as possible in their speeches. Additionally, another idea could be to refer to immigrant’s home countries, like Puerto Rico or Mexico, as “trash” or “trash cans” as often as possible. Considering the success Trump had last November with this approach, Democrats are very excited about the possibilities with this type of policy and its ability to court Latino voters in future elections.
